When teenagers don’t have a workspace of their own, the predictable outcome is daily clearing off of school notebooks, binders, and backpacks from dining surfaces before meals. This was the situation our current client asked ESD to help her resolve. As 2016 marked her daughter’s “Sweet 16” milestone, she wanted to gift her a beautiful space as a reward for years of hard work on her studies that offered privacy, comfort, and optimal functionality.
To begin, ESD worked on a design concept for the project based upon her request for a custom desk in her bedroom. Our client had also just painted the walls “Drizzle” SW 6479.
A rendering was produced for the desk. The narrow staircase in the home added an extra challenge. The design was tweaked so that the desk was built in sections with removable legs, like a kitchen table. Although we could have elected a built-in piece, similar to built-in bookshelves, ESD felt it was important to have pieces of furniture that could accompany our client’s daughter wherever life takes her.
The iterative process led us to an “L” shaped design with tapered wooden legs and cubby drawers tucked into the corner of the desk to create a centralized focal point.
Along with a few other accessories, our client also liked these gun metal letters to add a bit of an industrial look and additional lighting to the shelves above.
Removable drawers and top shelves were fastened to the wall with a simple French cleat system giving our client loads of storage space. This approach optimized the amount of free work-surface on the desktop. The opening at the bottom of the desk hides all of her school binders and books due to its depth.
Stay tuned for a full reveal of this room in a future blog post.
